Hearth News:

1. Currently the biggest news is the tax credit for homeowners who wish to install a new wood or pellet appliance in their homes. This credit is for 30% of the total cost, up to $1500. Purchase must be made before 12/31/10. After that the tax money will be gone!

2. A little known fact in NH is that if you have electric heat, you can get a substantial discount if you have a backup wood heat source. The following is directly from PSNH's web site:

HEATSMART

PSNH's HEATSMART Program provides qualifying residential and small business customers with a discounted kilowatt-hour rate for their separately metered electric space heating (and cooling if using a heat pump) and electric water heating. The discount is applied to the distribution charge, the transmission charge, and the stranded cost recovery charge components of the rate per kWh. The system benefits charge, electricity consumption tax and energy service charge components are not discounted. Based on the rates in effect as of August 1, 2009 the discount is approximately 20% as compared to the general residential rate (lights, appliances etc…) per kWh.

3. A new law has passed in NH making it possible for homeowners to renovate their heating systems to a "green fuel" such as wood, and have the town loan them the money. The homeowner would then pay the town back through an additional payment on their property tax bill, similar to a mortgage or home improvement loan. However although it has passed state approval, it must first be approved by the individual town for it to take effect.

4. In NH any person working on any gas appliance must have a state issued NH Gas Fitters license (aka Amelia's Law). This is the only NH State License that applies to our industry (anyone advertising that they are a "licensed sweep" in NH is misleading you).
